Hello Lincoln, it’s good to be back.

imageMy nose is cold, my feet a numb and my hands are finding it difficult to write this. Winter has well and truly arrived. Like many Brits, I am one of those who turns hysterical as soon as the first flake of snow falls on the floor - usually out of excitement. However, I feel it’s a little too late. A month earlier and Christmas may have felt even more Christmassy than it was.

It feels good being back in Lincoln! Yesterday was my first lecture, but seen as how the tutor failed to show, it meant an obvious Starbucks trip was in order. My first workshop of 2013 did go ahead; The Journalist on Screen. I was probably a bit optimistic to be hoping for The Devil Wears Prada, Confessions of a Shopaholic and Sex and The City. Saying that, our first film was The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest which was surprisingly good. I’m thinking I’ll pop the reviews up on here once my tutor has looked at them. Films about journalists really are quite good, even if it isn’t Sex and the City.

imageSpeaking of films, I saw Les Miserables on Monday and oh my word, it’s one of the best films I have ever seen. Having seen the musical in summer last year I was sceptical as to whether it could live up to the stage version. But it did, and them some. It’s definitely going to be the film of the year, everyone is talking about it and singing the songs… You just have to go! Oh, and if you leave and don’t feel compelled to learn every song, lyric by lyric, there is something extremely wrong with you.

Possibly the best thing about being back in Cathedral City is seeing everyone. A lot of my family and friends back home have said how much I’m going to miss Lincoln once I graduate. I don’t see it that way. Instead, I know I’ll miss all the amazing people I’ve met and Lincoln just won’t be the same without them.

If you’ve never been to Lincoln before, you have to visit. Seriously. It looks stunning in the summer, with an array of restaurants that sit along the Brayford (big river thing), the quirky shops and beautiful architecture. Despite some city’s which look ugly in the winter, Lincoln is the complete opposite. It takes on another life of its own.

I should be thankful I live in one of the best cities in the world. At least in my eyes anyway.

The Olympics…. I’m hooked!

The majority of people who know me have the understanding that sport is something that really doesn’t interest me, but all that has changed since Friday. After Mary Poppins flew in to defeat Voldemort I was sold. If Mary’s a part of it, maybe Olympics was something I might be something that I could enjoy after all, and I’ve gone above and beyond! My new discovered loves include: Swimming, Diving, Fencing, Weight Lifting, Gymnastics, Equestrian, (Beach) Volleyball and of course tennis!

It seems that the Olympic games has helped the whole country rediscover a love for sport, supporting their country as competitors compete in something that has taken years of training. For that, I now have a lot of respect for those who have put all that effort in. However, we’ve still got a long way to go before I even contemplate liking football…

To think it was seven years ago since London and the rest of the UK found out we were hosting the Olympic games, and now it’s here. Wasn’t the opening ceremony just pure genius? Mary Poppins, James Bond, Mr Bean and The Queen, anyone would think I’d had some input.

Time really does fly, tomorrow will be the first of August and this month looks promising with some events. I turn 20 for starters… eek, I’m off to London and I’ll be moving into my new house! It does seem like a lifetime ago since I was in Lincoln making the daily trip into Uni, if I’m honest I do miss it, especially all the fabulous people. If you’re reading this now, I love and miss you lots. Can’t wait to see you all very soon.

Here’s to wishing you a very happy August. Now I’m off to catch-up on the swimming and indulge in a nice cup of tea!

Olympic Scarf.

The 2012 Olympics in London are getting so close now, and I decided to do my bit for Team GB. NEXT have designed an official scarf which is more than an accessory as the design dipictcs:

  • 900 Figures to represent 900 athletes of Team GB
  • 900 Hearts, showing our special love for each of them.
  • 900 Stars, to recognise every athlete is a true star.
  • 60 Hands, symbolising the athletes’ 60 million supporters.
  • 26 Sports competed in the 2012 games.
  • 14 Paralympic Lions, as London hosts the 14th Paralympic Games.

The design also includes English roses, Welsh daffodils, Irish flax and Scottish thistles.

An audience with Rachel Caine - 16.5.2012

The imagination is a powerful tool, it is what artists use to create art, musicians to make music and writers to well, write. For some, there are those who are lucky enough to make money from their vivid imaginations.

Rachel Caine first started writing when she was 14 after her teacher gave her an assignment. An assignment that possibly changed her life forever. It took three attempts before she struck gold with her Morganville Vampire series which is now thriving success:

“At first my editor wanted three books, my ambition was six. But then my editor wanted more so it became six, then nine, 12 and now it’s 15!”

Aside from the Morganville series, Rachel’s other works include: The Weather Warden and The Revivalist - book two is out this August. It struck me that this strong woman who is very passionate about what she does, and enjoys every second of writing. The philosophy still lies, if you find something you love doing and can make money from it, you’ll never work a day in your life.

However, the publishing industry is caught up in the technological revolution, and for those inspiring authors the desire to publish their work to e-books is extremely tempting. Rachel doesn’t see this as the answer:

“The first thing you do [write] isn’t going to be like what you do in 5 years. I see people who jump into it and get crushed. And if you put your work out there, some people aren’t going to be kind. I like the filter system of traditional publishing because it makes you work. When you get that first bad email it stings but you’re always learning from critical reviews.”

Lincoln Brayford.

It was my friends birthday the other day and could you get a better setting than this? It was beautifully warm, with a slight breeze, good company, and good food!

There’s something horrible about waking up in a morning, drawing back the curtains and seeing rain. Fingers crossed it doesn’t last too long.
